By “playing” with a pentagon, a pattern forming principle has developed for constructing fractal figures. These figures can be transformed into a more and more complex net of patterns by rotating, flipping or moving them around. (fig. 1-3)
The figures and pattern nets have properties, such as divergence, contradiction, simplicity, complexity, symmetry, asymmetry, which allow limitless analogies with natural phenomena. They can be understood as an abstract visual representation of essential features inherent to the world.
The patterns visualize the diversity of life, illustrate properties of universal character. They seem to penetrate all levels of life.
Fractal structures even developed into three-dimensional works. In doing so, the ornament is growing beyond a pure surface decoration. It is not added at the end of the design work, but is always part of this process.
The trigger for the deep and intensive study of patterns was a trip to Andalusia, in which I became aware of the powerful beauty of Islamic ornamentation, never seen before. These impressions and patterns were burnt into my mind, leaving their mark.
The own highly complex patterns show many similarities with the patterns of the Islamic art, yet they are different, resulting from “playing” with the pentagon.
